MEET
MAREN...
Who is she?
Maren Phillips
has lived in the San Antonio, Texas, area since moving
there in 1973. San Antonio is "home", but wanderlust takes Maren all
over
the US and the world for work and fun. Since graduating from
Washington University School of Fine Art in St. Louis, Mo., with her
BFA, Maren's driving passion has been her art.
"Being an artist isn't what I
do, it's who I am."
With every waking moment Maren sees with
the eyes of an artist.
Every decision and plan is formulated with an eye
for detail and
symmetry. She has a strong "visual memory" allowing her to
see
something in reality and recreate it in a piece of art.
What does she do?
Maren paints and draws
portraits. Her work reaches into the heart and
essence of her subjects.
"It's
all in the eyes. If I can get the expression in
the eyes, that tells
the
whole story."
Working
quickly, Maren gets a general sketch then hones in on the
details.
Her line is at
times soft and at times bold. Her expression is loose and fluid,
but
grounded. Her work has often been called "Classic" and
"Impressionistic"
as well as
realistic.
Other
kinds of work?
Maren loves to do portraits of
dogs, but she also does portraits of children,
adults, and other animals. In addition, Maren paints luscious
watercolor
paintings of birds
and landscapes and other natural subjects.
Many of her
travels take her to bird watching destinations and Birding Festivals.
